The Benrinnes distillery is featured in Chapter 4 and it’s a heavier, more full-flavoured experience than your ‘typical’ Speyside single malt.
We love the meaty, nutty and malty qualities of this distillery and it was those qualities we continued to explore throughout our cask selection.
In active American Oak casks, we see a complex whisky develop over time that evolves into a brilliantly robust single malt. It’s no surprise that Benrinnes is highly regarded by blenders here in Scotland.
As many as 11 distilleries use water sourced from Benrinnes.
The distillery was originally called The Lyne of Rutherie.
The current distillery is actually about a mile away from the original distillery site.
Benrinnes distillery is a remote distillery, situated 210 metres above sea level. The distillery spirit is heavy, meaty and quite sulphury, partly because of a complicated and unusual distillation process it used to use (still tasted in older bottlings) and partly because of the use of worm tubs - horizontal condensing pipes passing through very cold water ensuring a slow condensation.
The spirit is in high demand by blenders as a result.
