Linkwood has a strong cult following and is much sought after by whisky enthusiasts. It is considered a noble malt, produced at one of the region’s oldest distilleries.
It was founded in open land but is now part of the expanding town of Elgin. Nevertheless, sited by a reservoir, it is in a pretty area.
The malt can serve up the odd surprise, such as aniseed and smokiness, but it tends to be complex, with sweet and sour notes and some pleasant fruity and grassy notes.
Despite its label's ghoulish look, Linkwood offers a unique insight into one of Speyside’s best-kept secrets. At one time the distillery grew its own barley and had cows which ate the distillery’s own spent - and alcohol free - grain.
Linkwood has been released as three different 26 year olds, each spending 14 years in ex rum, red wine or port casks respectively.
The whisky features prominently in Johnnie Walker blends, but has also been bottled as a single malt in Diageo’s Flora and Fauna range.
